Pioneering Health & Activity Monitoring
Body Biolytics is a new tech start-up company under formation by MACSEA Ltd of Stonington, CT, focusing on applying field-proven activity monitoring software to the sport/fitness and health marketplace.
As a precursor to focusing on human activity monitoring, MACSEA pioneered the development of innovative engine performance health monitoring software within the marine industry. The company’s high-accuracy predictive software is installed on over 40 Navy ships and uses artificial intelligence and neural networks to keep a close watch on machinery health.
Today we are focused on exploiting the rapid growth of wearable devices, which seems to be leading far in front of non-wearable IoT innovations. Our launch point into the wearable space is Sports/Fitness, where we see growing demand for useful, actionable information. The emergence of advanced bio-sensing technology can supply a plethora of data to improve athletic performance. However, without knowing the activity being performed by the athlete, heart rate, blood pressure, and other physiological data returned from the wearable device have diminished meaning. Baselines of performance must be established for each activity in order to accurately track performance improvements. The state-of-the-art rarely goes beyond pedometer-type step counts, whose accuracy has been proven to be poor. We are developing AREs that use machine learning to imprint on individuals performing specific types of exercises and that can be subsequently used for high-accuracy identification from wearable measurements.
The Future Looks Bright
Both elder-care and obesity represent other immediate markets for our AREs. Tracking elderly activities for health and safety purposes, particularly remotely, can lessen the burden on families and care providers in ensuring that elderly people remain as active as possible and are safe in their homes. The US has an obesity epidemic, particularly in young people, and insurers and corporations are rapidly introducing digital health wellness programs to help people lose weight and reduce the risk of diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. Ubiquitous activity recognition via wearable and IoT measurements plays directly into these markets.
In the future, we see broad applicability of our ARE technology embedded within “smart” environments, such that human activities can be supported or enriched (e.g. technology-assisted living spaces for the elderly) through many context-aware applications.
Body Biolytics is currently seeking partnerships to bring its patent-pending technology to the commercial space.
